Lady Cougars advance to Regional Quarterfinals

The Rosebud-Lott Lady Cougars volleyball team has advanced to the Regional Quarterfinals of the playoffs.

The ladies traveled to Lorena last Tuesday on Halloween night for a Bi-District matchup with the Bruceville-Eddy Lady Eagles. The Lady Cougars swept Bruceville-Eddy 3-0, winning all three sets 25-14 to advance to the next round.

On Thursday, Nov. 2, Rosebud-Lott traveled to Axtell to face the Frost Lady Bears in the area round. The Lady Cougars defeated Frost, sweeping them 3-0 to keep their season alive in a game where they led for most of the game.

“We work on that in practice,” Coach Amanda Spencer said. “We do competitive drills where we’re staying ahead and making sure that when it comes down to a tie point that we win that. It’s pretty much whatever coach says with the girls, and we were just able to execute tonight.” Rosebud-Lott started the first set strong, scoring the first four points. The Lady Cougars kept up the offense with a kill by Brightan Willberg (6) to take a 5-2 lead. That was soon followed with a kill by Kayley Robertson (3) to make the score 7-2, and the Lady Cougars would extend their lead to 10-2.

Rosebud-Lott stayed ahead with a big spike from Kaitlyn Jenkins (7) to take a 12-5 lead. Jenkins continued pile on with two consecutive kills to increase the lead to 15-9, and soon increased the lead to double digits at 19-9 on a massive spike from Willberg. The Lady Cougars kept up the offense with a 4-1 run with a kill by Brooke Skala (13), making it a 23-10 lead, and they won the first set 25-10.

The first point of the second set was scored by Rosebud-Lott. The Lady Cougars began to separate from Frost with a kill by Jenkins for a 5-2 lead and continued to expand their lead to 8-2 with an ace from Kinsley Edwards (8). That was soon followed with a tip over kill from Robertson to make it a 9-3 lead. Frost tried to rally back but was stumped on a score by Jenkins for a 10-6 lead. Rosebud-Lott began to pull away an increased their lead to double digits at 16-6, and soon added on even more with two consecutive blocks by Robertson for a commanding 20-8 lead. Frost tried to come back with a 5-2 run, but the Lady Cougars responded with a kill by Jenkins for a 23-13 lead and would win the second set 25-17.

The first point of the third set went to Frost. The set stayed even until Rosebud-Lott came through with a kill by Skala for an 11-8 lead, which was soon followed with a block by Willberg to make the score 13-8. The Lady Cougars continued to pile on with two consecutive dump over kills from Robertson to give them a 15-8 lead.

Frost tried to come back with a 5-1 run, but the Lady Cougars answered their run with a kill by Willberg to keep them ahead 17-13. Frost refused to go away and made the score 18-15. Rosebud-Lott halted their momentum with a point then scored on two consecutive kills by Aniah Cavitt (10) for a 21-17 lead. The Lady Cougars held strong and finished them off to win the third set 25-19 to complete the sweep and advance to the regional quarterfinals.

“We seemed like we were a little too relaxed and taking it for granted,” Spencer said. “We’re playing a very good team, so when that happens and you let off a little bit, they’re going to come after you. So, we just had to turn it back on and once we did, we started taking care of everything.”

Their next matchup was in Robinson against a familiar opponent in the Bosqueville Lady Bulldogs, a team they have played twice this year already, winning one of those games. See results in next week’s paper.
