Integrity

“Mean Joe Green” played professional football for the Pittsburg Steelers from 1969 to 1981. He was born in Temple and was one of the most feared, but also one of the most respected defensive players to ever play the game of football.

In his autobiography, he told the story about the late Chuck Noll, the former head coach of the Steelers. Chuck Noll, in his career won four Super Bowls and earned the highest of respect from his players.

Joe Green told the story of how they were preparing to play the Houston Oilers when someone presented the coach with the Houston Oilers playbook.

He quickly called all his players together and said, “Gentlemen, this is the Houston Oilers playbook. We play the twice a year and we have in this book all of their plays and game plan.” Chuck Noll continued on and said, “But we are not going to open it. That is not how we do things. We are going to line up against them on the field and we are going to prepare and we are going to do what we do that will give us the best chance to win.”

With that being said, Coach Noll threw the playbook in the trash and walked away.

Integrity! Honesty! We just don’t see enough of it today. Friends, we may know the truth and we may even proclaim it to others, but if those who hear your words don’t see them coupled with integrity and honesty, those words, though true, will ring hollow.

Paul said , “In all things showing thyself a pattern of good works; in doctorine showing integrity, reverence and incorruptibility.” (Titus 2:7)  In other words, the Apostle Paul is simply saying, just be a good, honest person.
