Only Pay For What You Need

Weekly Devotional

I am sure that all of us have seen the obnoxious insurance commercial with Lemu Emu and Doug. They are insisting that you buy their insurance and when you do, you will only pay for what you need.

The truth is, that is not exactly news. Why would you want to buy insurance that you do not need?

But, how does "Only pay for what you need" apply to our relationship with God? Just how much religion do we need and what will it cost?

Some people may say, "I don't need much at all. I am a good person. I don't drink, or smoke or cuss, so why do I need religion?

We all need to be reminded of what the Apostle Paul tell us in Romans 3:23, "We have all sinned and come short of the glory of God." Again in Romans 6:23, "There is none righteous, no not one."

As to what it will cost, the premium is astronomical. The truth is, you could not even begin to make a down payment on the interest.

That is because Jesus has paid the price. He shed His blood. He gave His life.

So Jesus tells us in Luke 14:3 that "Whoever of you that does not forsake all that he has cannot be my disciple."

We are not talking dollars and cents here. We are talking about dedication and willing to surrender to the will of Christ. Not half-hearted lip service, but genuine service to Jesus Christ.

Do we really mean it when we sing the song, "I surrender all?" No! We don't have to worry about paying for what we need, because Jesus has already paid the price.
