BF&M Coop named Business of the Quarter

Many people ask why the Rosebud Chamber of Commerce includes the word “agriculture” in its name. This Business of the Quarter recipient shows why agriculture is vital to this community, perhaps even why our community is still thriving.

In 1952, Joe and Mike Voltin had a vision to build and operate a gin in the small community of Wilson just a few miles outside of Rosebud. Cotton was king in this area because of the rich, fertile black land and ideal climate. Back in the 50s and 60s there were many gins in operation throughout Central Texas. The Voltin brothers operated this successful gin until 1967 when it, like many others, closed.

In 1972, a group of area farmers purchased the gin and it began operation under the name Bell-Falls-Milam Coop or as the locals call it BFM Coop. It is currently the only operating gin in the area with between 20,000 and 35,000 bales produced a year. The gin has up to 25 employees per year, some permanent, year-round employees and some seasonal. Jesse Reyna has been the manager since 1977 and now has the help of Luke Sell.

The gin has always been eager to contribute to the Chamber with generous donations at many of their events. They are also involved in the community by sponsoring various youth sports teams. This is why the Rosebud Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture is proud to honor the BFM Coop with our Business of the Quarter award. Keep up the good work!
