Cmr. George P. Bush to host webinar to prepare communities for 2020 Hurricane Season

AUSTIN, TX – May 28, 2020 – Each school day, thousands of Texans volunteer their time in more than 8,800 schools across the Lone Star State.

There is an annual opportunity to recognize the contributions of local volunteers by nominating them for the State Board of Education’s Heroes for Children Award. 2020 nominations are now being accepted; the deadline for submissions is July 1, 2020 at 5 p.m. (CDT).

A Texas resident who gives time, service, and support to public schools and Texas students may be nominated for the award. However, elected officials and educational employees are ineligible for consideration of this particular recognition.

Each year, the 15 SBOE members select one award recipient from each of their districts. Last year’s 15 recipients donated a staggering total of 179 years of service to Texas public schools.

Through this award, the board has recognized 465 outstanding school volunteers across Texas since its creation in 1994.

Examples of volunteer service provided by past “Heroes for Children” include activities such as mentoring children, assisting teachers, organizing fundraisers, spearheading bond campaigns, and doing much more to help create happy, thriving school cultures.

This year, the recipients will be recognized at the board’s September general meeting in Austin. Each recipient will receive a plaque and a resolution. Their names will also be engraved on a perpetual plaque outside the SBOE board room.

The nomination form and additional information about the award can be found at: https://tea.texas.gov/Heroes_for_Children.aspx.
