As COVID Restrictions Lifted, Consumers Must Be Weary of Roofing Scams

Texans More Vulnerable Than Ever to the Effects of Fraud in Roofing

AUSTIN, TX — Today, Sarah Ramon, Executive Director of the Roofing Contractors Association of Texas (RCAT) released the following statement as Texans see light at the end of the tunnel from the COVID-19 crisis:

"The roofing industry, like so many industries across America, was deeply affected by the chaos of the coronavirus pandemic that swept the nation. RCAT, and our national affiliate, fought to ensure that our members could continue to serve the needs of residential and commercial property owners in a safe, smart manner.

While largely successful, more restrictive local orders in some areas of the state had a significant impact on our ability to deliver services. Now, as these local orders are beginning to be revisited, we look forward to getting back to work in these areas.

However, consumers must be more vigilant than ever that scammers, crooks, and thieves masquerading as legitimate roofing contractors may seek to victimize them in the wake of all this confusion.

Roofing fraud is bad enough in normal times. It's why RCAT and other legitimate organizations have worked to pass legislation providing consumer protections to our completely unregulated industry. But now, more than ever, that lawlessness jeopardizes the health and safety of Texans and their property. And with so much unemployment and hardship right now, their precious financial resources.

While some Texans are anxious to repair or replace a roof that has not been able to be taken care of during the response to coronavirus, they should first review our tips for protecting yourself as a consumer. Please visit the Safe Roofs Over Texas website for more."
