Free Microchipping event this weekend

The City of Rosebud is sponsoring a pet microchipping event on Saturday, July 11.

According to City Administrator, Keith Whitfield, the event is being held to help reunite found animals in the city with their owners.

Within the City of Rosebud, animal owners are required to have some form of identification on their animals, with a few exceptions to animal type.

Section 2.02.01 of the Code of Ordinances, “Except as provided herein, all animals within the city shall be marked by some type of identifying license, tag, band, tattoo or brand by which the animal’s owner can be identified. Animals exempted from this requirement are mice, rats, rabbits, guineas, hamsters, gerbils, ferrets, fowl and snakes.” (Ordinance 2017-08-21-02, art. II, sec. 1)

Having a microchip will allow citizens to adhere to the above ordinance if animals lack a brand, tag, band, or tattoo.

A microchip is a small, electronic chip enclosed in a glass cylinder that is about the same size as a grain of rice and is injected under the skin without the use of surgery or anesthesia.

These chips can be responsible for lost animals to be returned to their owners, as when an animal is taken to a shelter or veterinarian, one of the first things they do is scan the animal for a microchip.

According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, chips do not have batteries and are only activated when passed over by a scanner, which transmits the chip number to the reader. The chip number allows quick access to owner information as long as it is updated properly. It’s possible for medical information to be stored in the search database as well.

The Rosebud event is free to citizens and will happen from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 602 W Main Street. Patrons are asked to enter off on 6th street for attendance.

Proof of residency (Rosebud Utility bill) is required for free chipping, but out of town pets can be chipped for $10. Dogs must be on leashes and cats should be in their crate. The event is first come first serve and has a cap of five (5) chips per household. Call Rosebud City Hall at (254) 583-7926 for more information.
