THLN Provides Tools To Help Kids Advocate for Animals from Home

With schools closed through the end of the year, THLN helps parents and kids use the extra time to get active on behalf of Texas animals.

AUSTIN, Texas – On Monday, April 27th, the Texas Humane Legislation Network (THLN) released a webinar on their Junior Advocacy Program, which gives kids the opportunity to advocate for animals leading up to the next legislative session, even while stuck at home during COVID-19 quarantine.

The Junior Advocacy Program begins with an easily-accessible webinar that covers a range of important topics for young advocates to learn about:

  • The history of animal protection in Texas
  • The laws THLN has passed since 2001
  • Current laws on abandoning animals, puppy mills, greyhound racing, and more
  • THLN's priority legislation for the 2021 session: adequate care and shelter
  • General background on how a bill becomes a law and the basics of the Texas Legislature

Over recent years, THLN has seen how much young Texans are interested in getting involved in animal advocacy. One of THLN's most passionate supporters in the 2019 session was 12-year-old Bella Burgan, who advocated in the Capitol for THLN's priority legislation. Her dedication inspired THLN to expand a program that allows young advocates from all across Texas to get involved.

"We hope this webinar encourages kids to get involved from home by writing letters to legislators and learning more about animals and how to protect them in Texas," said Shelby Bobosky, Executive Director for THLN. "We have seen some great success in getting young advocates involved in the past and we are excited to continue this momentum into 2021."

Once quarantine restrictions are lifted, THLN plans to safely roll out other parts of the Junior Advocacy program.
