Rain Couldn’t Stop “Food for Families” Drive

Despite heavy rain to start the day on Friday, Nov. 21, Marlin collected more than 6,500 pounds of food in the 36th annual Central Texas “Food For Families” Drive. Set up in the H-E-B parking lot, volunteers collected donations, weighed them, sorted them, then loaded boxes to take to Falls County Samaritan House down the street, where the Sheriff’s Office assisted in stocking shelves with trustees from the county jail. While the morning rain likely kept some potential givers at home, others showed up anyway, and more ventured out to contribute after the rainclouds had passed. In the coming weeks and months, Falls County Samaritan House will distribute the food to those in need countywide.

The brisk, windy weather prompted organizers to move the event inside, where County Judge Jay Elliot, American Legion Post 31 Commander Fred Ormsby, Falls County Historical Commission Chairman Trudie Asbury and Vice Chair Elizabeth Nelson each shared stories, prayers and poems to honor and recognize the military service of all veterans, with special thanks to the local veterans.
