28 Miles, No Worries

TEXAS GRAVEL CHAMPIONSHIP

Rosebud was the home of another successful Texas Gravel Championship hosted by Gritty Teeth Racing.

The competition welcomed just over 100 racers for four different racing distances. For the beginners there was a 12-mile course, followed by at 28-mile course. The two main races, which came with trophies for those who placed, were the 53-mile, and 100-mile courses.

For Andre Truesdale, native to Rosebud, this was the first time to compete in a cycling race. He has been riding for about two years now between his home and Lott. This past weekend though, he caught the racing bug.

Being part of a competitive family, he enjoyed not only the physical demands put on him, but also the mental.

“It’s mental, are you going to make it up that next hill?” said Truesdale as he talked about the course that took the riders almost into Cameron, with an almost mile long incline.

After Saturday’s race, he is getting ready for the next race in Waco.

Rosebud, and the surrounding areas are perfect for events like this because of how peaceful it is when it comes to traffic.

“It’s nice to not have to worry about cars or anything like that, except for the occasional dog,” said Brett Kinsey with Mafia Racing out of Austin, and winner of the 53.7-mile course.

Bicycling enthusiast were not the only ones enjoying themselves that morning. The organizers at Gritty Teeth made it a priority to provide something for the whole town. That morning they held workshops teaching bike safety for the children after doing a helmet fitting and giveaway. At the end, kids in different age groups got together for there very own races. There were also inflatable water slides and snow cones for everyone afterwards.
