County Commissioners lift burn ban again

Falls County Commissioners lifted the burn ban in the county and set Free Trash Day for Oct. 8 during a meeting Monday.

The Falls County Commissioners Court met at the County Courthouse in Marlin on Sept. 26 with County Judge Jay Elliott presiding. Commissioners present were Milton Albright (Pct. 1), F.A. Green (Pct. 2), Jason Willberg (Pct. 3) and Nita Wuebker (Pct. 4).

Commissioners approved to continue the lift of the burn ban for at least the next two weeks.

Several agenda items were approved including the contract overview of the Copperhead Solar/The Industrial Company (TIC) road cut/bore on CR 149 and CR 150. Because the City of Golinda does not have the operating equipment necessary for road improvements, the Commissioners approved the Interlocal agreement with the City of Golinda to provide equipment and personnel for the $20,800 project.

The upcoming Falls County Free Trash Day is Saturday, Oct. 8, from 8 a.m. to noon including two locations, Falls County Jail Site and Waste Collection State in Lott. No chemicals, hazardous waste or roofing materials will be accepted. Tire disposal will be available at the City of Marlin Trash Collections Station on Highway 7 West.

In other matters, Commissioners approved the 2023 Home-Delivered Meal Grant Program. During the current Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA) fiscal year, the county will receive $17,210.83 to provide the home delivered meals. As part of the criteria, Falls County will provide a minimum of $1,200 to the Central Texas Senior Ministry for serving home delivered meals to seniors in Falls County.

Two positions for the Falls County Appraisal District Board of Directors will become vacant Jan. 1, 2023. Byrleen Terry and Ian Giesler are currently serving the expiring terms and were acknowledged as having done an outstanding job. Both agreed to continue serving. Falls County has the option of nominating them and/or nominating other candidates.

Commissioners approved the 2023 Falls County Resolution, Indigent Defense Grant Program which would provide county indigent defense services improvements. In addition, the Commissioners approved the purchase of computer backup software storage for the Sheriff’s Office. Jeff Jackson, Road & Bridge Administrator, reported a vacancy for shredder operator in Lott. He noted there are several jobs going on and is awaiting approval to move forward with new projects.

Commissioner Green moved to approve the payment of bills, including reimbursements, late charges, the transfer of cash or funds form any line item or department to another, book transfers and budget amendments. Seconded by Commissioner Wuebker, motion carried.

The minutes from the prior meeting were approved. Commissioner Wuebker noted a correction in the Marlin Democrat which should have read: Commissioners approved the 82nd District Court $2,040 salary increase instead of 5 percent increase for Court Reporter, Court Coordinator, County Auditor, Assistant Auditor and Accounts Payable/Payroll Clerk. Correction was noted by staff writer. With no further business, the meeting adjourned.
