Local Chapter of DRT Hosts Ceremony for Citizen Medallion
The Daughters of the Republic of Texas, Sterling C. Robertson Chapter, Waco, will hold its monthly meeting on Thursday, October 2, at the Greater Waco Chapter of Commerce Building, 101 S. Third Street, Waco. The business meeting and presentation will begin at 1:00pm.
The guest speaker will be Trevor Wardlaw, Erath Chapter, Sons of the Republic of Texas. He will present a slide show of the marking of the grave of Cynthia Ann Parker with a Citizens Medallion in June at Fort Sill, OK. Sterling C. Robertson chapter sponsored the medallion and traveled to take part in the ceremony. Public is invited to attend this presentation.
The Daughters of the Republic of Texas was founded on Nov.6, 1891, and the objects of the DRT are to perpetuate the memory and spirit of the men and women who achieved and maintained the independence of Texas. To encourage historical research into the earliest records of Texas; to foster the preservation of documents and relics; to encourage the publication of records of individual service of the soldiers, sailors, and patriots of the Republic and other source material for the history of Texas. To promote the celebration of Texas Honor Days as defined by the members.
The Sterling C. Robertson Chapter, DRT, urge citizens to mark adown important Texas history date in their calendars for the month of October. October 2 – Gonzales Day, first recognized battle of the Texas Revolution fought in Gonzales. The Texas force of one hundred and sixty men challenged the Mexican military authority by refusing to surrender a brass cannon previously given to the town as a means of protection against the Indians. The Battle of Gonzales lasted only a few minutes, but most citizens in Texas realized that there was no turning back, a war had begun. Where the words “Come and Take It” were first spoken. We also urge citizens to fly their Texas flag on Gonzales Day.
Any woman 16 or older is eligible for DRT membership if she is a lineal descendant of a loyal resident or colonist, male, or female, regardless of age, who established residence in The Republic of Texas prior to February 19, 1846. The time periodfor “residence” shall be the beginning of the Spanish Colonial Period in 1820 and shall include both colonists and native residents during this period.
Children of the Republic of Texas membership is also open to any child, male or female, up to age 21. SCR Chapter sponsors the Waco Village Chapter of CRT.
