McAtee remembers Rosebud teacher Mary Lee Stubbs

The Wednesday Study Club’s May meeting on the 14th hosted several visitors, heard a “fast and furious” summary of the year’s activities and ended with a salad luncheon.

Carol Stock, president, called the meeting to order, lead the invocation and the pledges to the flags and welcomed the guests.

Guests attending were David and Kay McAtee, Francine Hanseler, Judy Sullenberger, Karan Killgore and Debra Greger.

Also in attendance was Doris Hoelscher, associate member, and 13 regular members.

Pat Runcie made a special presentation, introducing David McAtee, a former Rosebud High School student who was presented the 50-year distinguished lawyer award from the State Bar Foundation of the State Bar of Texas.

McAtee, in turn, presented a transcript of the far-ranging interview he underwent in being vetted to receive the award. In the interview, he remarked on the interest that Mary Lee Stubbs, a long-time Senior English teacher at RHS, had shown in him beginning in the seventh grade and continuing through graduation. She had pushed him to become involved in speaking and one-act play activities, in addition the many sports interests he had at that time, and was instrumental in preparing him for his eventual career as an attorney. He gave the transcript to the Rosebud High School Memorial Hall as a tribute to her memory.

Beth Allen, secretary, read a summary of the year’s activities while Sheryl Fuchs, scrapbooker extraordinaire, moved around the room with the scrapbook for the year, showing news stories and pictures from the various activities.

In old business, Stock said the copies of the Rosebud News will eventually be moved to the Marlin Democrat offices in Marlin, options are still being considered for the restroom renovations and many ideas had been received for next year’s programs.

Stock said she and Norma Burns would be finalizing the program plans soon.

The meeting was adjourned, and members and guests enjoyed a luncheon of chicken and rice salad, Mexican salad, kale salad, tortilla rolls, fruit salads and puddings. Burns provided a lovely centerpiece of spring flowers for the old oak serving table.
