My Commitment to Protecting Your Vote
Just this past weekend many of you exercised your right to vote by casting your ballot in municipal elections across the district. I want to thank all of those who exercised this right and congratulate all of the candidates who came out on top! In light of this, I believe it is only right to use this week’s column to inform you on what I am doing in the Texas House to secure our elections for generations to come.
Before I was elected to the Texas House, I served as an election judge right here in our community. I know what it’s like to show up before sunrise, organize ballots, assist voters, and stay late to make sure every vote is counted properly. I also know just how seriously our election workers take their job—because I’ve stood beside them.
To all the election judges, clerks, and volunteers across House District 13 and the entire state: thank you. You are the backbone of our democratic process. Your commitment to honesty and fairness gives Texans confidence in our elections.
That confidence must be protected. This legislative session, we are taking strong, principled action to ensure our elections remain secure, accurate, and trusted by the people we serve. Here are some of the most important bills we’re taking up to make that happen.
First we must protect our voter rolls from illegal aliens. HJR 49 would ask voters to amend the Texas Constitution to require that only U.S. citizens can register to vote in Texas elections—reinforcing what federal law already states and sending a clear message about who should be participating in our democracy. HB 2279 strengthens this effort by providing a clear process to identify and disqualify non-citizens from voter registration rolls using verified data from the Department of Public Safety. SJR 37 further clarifies the requirement for U.S. citizenship to vote in any election—local, state, or federal—helping to prevent cities from experimenting with non-citizen voting policies in the future. These policies will all stop Texas voter rolls from looking like the lawless voter rolls in California.
Next, we need to secure the voting process itself. HB 1661 improves how election supplies and materials are tracked and distributed, ensuring transparency and accountability at every voting location. As a former election judge, I understand how critical it is that ballots, forms, and equipment are properly secured and documented. SB 505 creates a process to investigate and respond to credible allegations of election irregularities, giving the Secretary of State more tools to step in when problems arise. SB 618 makes it illegal for any local government to alter election procedures—like extending voting hours or changing voting locations—without proper legal authority. This ensures uniformity across the state and prevents confusion or manipulation during the voting process.
Together, these reforms send a clear message: in Texas, we believe in elections that are fair, honest, and conducted by the book.
As someone who has worked an election from behind the table, I know the people of Texas want two things: the ability to vote freely, and the assurance that their vote will not be canceled out by fraud or error. And while the Democrats try to make this a partisan issue, it’s just common sense.
I’m proud to stand with my Republican colleagues in the Texas Legislature to deliver on the promise of secure elections. And I’ll continue listening to the voters of House District 13, who want to preserve the integrity of our democratic process—not only for ourselves, but for the generations that follow.
If you ever have questions about these bills or any others we’re working on, my office is here to serve you.
Let’s keep Texas elections safe, secure, and strong.
