Preservation Rosebud plans Golden Years Reunion reception
As Preservation Rosebud met on Thursday, March 13, to plan the annual reception for the Golden Years Reunion, members were met with an obstacle - the fan motor in the downstairs air conditioner was out! This unexpected repair took precedence for the ten members present: President Les Heugatter, Vice-President Greg Wallace, Secretary Fran Heugatter, Treasurer Alfred Martinez, Facilities Manager James Prothro, Grant Writers Marla Wallace and Caroline Akers Wright, Lifetime Member Becky Meacham, and Joe and Sharon Saunders.
The group voted unanimously to hire Matt Hoelscher of Hoelscher Services to make the necessary repairs to the HVAC system and install surge protectors.
Now the building will be comfortable when Preservation Rosebud hosts a morning reception from 9-11 a.m. for the Saturday, April 5, Golden Years event.
A visit that day from Leola Komar is always a treat. Her continued support and encouragement have earned her the title “Sweetheart of Preservation Rosebud.” Mrs. Komar is also a Lifetime Member of Preservation Rosebud.
An important donation to the railroad display was made by Greg and Marla Wallace. Previously, “The San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railway,” the story of the famous “SAP” Railway of Texas by John W. Hedge and Geoffrey S. Dawson, had been on loan by Carroll Warschak from his private collection. The Wallaces decided to provide a permanent copy of this book, an invaluable addition to preserving the history of Rosebud. A 21-gun salute to Greg and Marla Wallace for creating and enhancing the train display.
Les Heugatter presented two framed displays, one a chronological history of Rosebud and the other a unique list of distances between Rosebud on U.S. Highway 77 and various cities. Did you know that Rosebud is 203 miles northwest of Galveston?
Prior to the meeting, The Executive Board met at Bravo’s Station for a tasty lunch and to discuss the need to choose a name for the museum building and get new signage. At one time, it was known as the Old City Hall/ Fire Station. After a robust discussion by Les Heugatter, James Prothro, Greg Wallace, and Fran Heugatter, a name was selected. It was agreed to take a field trip to Texas Sign in Temple to work on a design. Be sure to follow Preservation Rosebud on Facebook for updates on the building’s new name.
After the meeting was adjourned, the group enjoyed refreshments and socializing. Marla Wallace’s signature buttermilk pound cake was back by popular demand. Everyone agreed it was her best ever. A few people could be spotted taking home an extra piece for later.
“Girl Scout” olive dip, potato chips, honey wheat pretzel twists, cheese squares, jalapeno summer sausage, crackers, Hershey’s kisses, tangerines, and iced tea were provided by Les and Fran Heugatter. Setting an alarm to see the 2:00 a.m. lunar eclipse was considered but rejected by unanimous decision.
The following day a work session was held from 9 a.m. to noon to begin cleaning for the Golden Years alumni’s visit. The next workday is scheduled for Thursday, April 3, at 9 a.m.
The museum needs a new broom and dustpan. If you would like to donate a lightweight broom and dustpan, it can be dropped off that morning at 117 N. 2nd. St. If you can stay and help spruce up displays, all the better. All volunteers are welcome!
