Revelers out for Juneteenth Celebration

Members of the rosebud community celebrated their independence this past weekend at the annual Juneteenth Parade.

Organizations and individuals alike showed up Saturday morning to participate in the parade. Young and old arrived to celebrate the day that those who had been enslaved were now set free.

The holiday dates back to 1865 when Union soldiers landed in Galveston and announced the end of the Civil War to slaves in Texas on June 19. The Union victory meant that the peoples who had been denied freedom since before this country was a country could now live in freedom.
