Stiles Farm Field Day set for June 20 in Thrall

Blackland producers will learn more about soil management, results of hemp production trials, weed control options and cattle stocking rates at the Stiles Farm Field Day to be held from 4:30-8:15 p.m. June 20 in Thrall.

The Stiles Farm is located at 5700 Farm-to-Market Road 1063. The event is sponsored by the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service.

There is no registration fee. A catered dinner will be sponsored by local area agribusinesses and the Williamson County Farm Bureau is sponsoring the continuing education unit portion. Registration begins at 4:30 p.m. with concurrent field tours beginning at 5:30 p.m.

One Texas Department of Agriculture integrated pest management and one general continuing education unit will be offered.

“We will offer a lot of information to producers looking to maximize input dollars,” said Ryan Collett, Stiles Farm manager. “Every producer is mindful of input costs, and we hope to offer something for everyone with production tips plus a look at some alternative crops that may become a fit for our area.”

Scott Nolte, Ph.D., AgriLife Extension state weed specialist in the Department of Soil and Crop Sciences, Bryan-College Station — New Pasture Weed Control Product Demonstration and Evaluation.

Jacquelyn Prestegaard-Wilson, Ph.D., AgriLife Extension livestock specialist in the Department of Animal Science, Bryan-College Station — An In-Depth Look at Cattle Stocking Rate Management Decisions: How To Prepare For and Recover From Drought.

Ronnie Schnell, Ph.D., AgriLife Extension agronomist in the Department of Soil and Crop Sciences, Bryan-College Station — Late Nitrogen Management in Corn, Potential of Soybeans in the Blacklands.

David Kerns, Ph.D., AgriLife Extension state integrated pest management coordinator and professor in the Department of Entomology, Bryan-College Station — Planning for Hessian Fly in Wheat and Other Emergent IPM Issues.

Following the field tours and evening meal, Jason Johnson, Ph.D., AgriLife Extension economist, Stephenville, will provide a grain update. Awards and door prizes also will be presented to conclude the field day.
