Study Club hears updates from City of Rosebud

The Wednesday Study Club met on Sept. 14, 2022, at the D Brown Library with 16 members and six guests present.  Pat Runcie called the meeting to order. Flag pledges were recited, and Mary Ann Mitchell gave the invocation.

Runcie introduced Rosebud City Manager Ken Murray.  He gave an update on city activities.

On Monday the City Council will vote on the engineering firm to start the cleaning out of the ditches.  He is working on an ordinance committee to rewrite city ordinances since most are out of date.  He is looking for interested people to serve on the committee.

Murray related that the city has all of its valves replaced for proper looping.  In this way only sections of the city lose water during a leak.  This is a major upgrade for the city.  A new sewer replacement system that has been in the planning for several years will now come to fruition.

Finally, Murray noted that the copies of The Rosebud News have not yet been moved into City Hall from the nearby old white building, but it should be happening in the near future.  Murray ended by thanking the WSC for its support of city activities.

Runcie then introduced Kelly Hughes, the librarian, who gave a library update.  The D Brown Library has received a $2,500 grant from the Texas Book Festival for adult books and a $4,000 grant from Dollar General for youth books.

Through grants, donations, and Wednesday Study Club support, the library has received over $15,000 this year.

Hughes was extremely proud of being able to secure these funds for library book improvements.  Hughes stated that the summer program, “Oceans of Possibilities” was a huge success.  Thirty-three children signed up and 18 finished with at least 8,000 minutes of reading tallied.  She is looking to do a Thanksgiving and Christmas program as well.

Hughes is now looking to start a GED class along with MCC starting in January.  Books are the only expense, and the grants can help with that.  There were 67 new patrons signed up this past year and 964 new items were cataloged.  Between 2700 and 2900 items were checked out this past year.  Overall Hughes is very pleased with the increased activity happening at the library.

Runcie carried out regular business.  The Library Book Committee needs a third member and Mary Frances Glass volunteered to fill that position.

The meeting adjourned and members worked on Christmas and Valentine cards to be taken to the Texas State Veterans Home in Temple.  During refreshments Myriam Virella and Sherril Rawlinson spoke to the group about a program from the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension concerning Community Conversations on Health.  They welcomed input ideas from the group concerning the Rosebud area community health needs.

The large oak table covered with a dark green cloth was centered with a birdhouse and several pheasants in fall-colored hues.  The drink table was covered with a handmade fall colored quilt centered with pumpkins.  Members enjoyed quiche, lettuce salad, fruit salad, pumpkin chiffon pie, chocolate sheet cake, and several flavored bundt cakes.  Hostesses were Glass, Sheryl Fuchs, and Rita Burris.  Next meeting will be Oct. 12, 2022.
