Suspect in local shooting caught

A well known felon was apprehended by the McLennan County Sheriff’s Office’s Fugitive Apprehension and Special Task (FAST) unit on Monday, May 4, in connection to a shooting in Falls County the previous weekend.

Around 1:15 a.m. Sunday morning, the Falls County Sheriff's Department responded to reports of “shots fired” at a trail ride party that took place in a pasture off of County Road 2876, about a mile and a half south of Downtown Marlin. The gathering had upwards of 250 attendees according to authorities.

Brayshon Negale Cummings, a 31-year-old male from the Waco area, opened fire on an unnamed unarmed man in his 20s after an altercation between the two individuals and shot him six times.

The victim remains in critical condition, despite being taken to Falls Community Hospital and Clinic and later airlifted to Baylor Scott and White in Temple to undergo surgery.

Cummings was captured just before 6 p.m. Monday evening and was taken to the McLennan County Jail after the MCSO's FAST Unit tracked him driving near Faulkner Lane and Selman Street in Waco. Deputies recovered an AK-47 upon searching his vehicle, along with multiple prohibited substances.

Cummings is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and the possession of marijuana, with bonds set at $1 million and taken to the McLennan County Jail for processing.

Cummings was caught within a matter of hours of being identified to FCSO/MCSO officials. The efforts shown by all involved are recognized by local officials who are grateful for their quick-witted handiwork.

“I want to commend the McLennan County Fugitive Apprehension and Special Task (FAST) Unit and Falls County Sheriff's Office,” said Marlin Police Chief Lawrence McCall. “[Their] efforts in police excellence will never be forgotten.”

Because Cummings is a felon, federal firearm charges could be coming his way. He is also said to have possible connections to a number of recent shootings, according to MCSO.

Cummings will remain in the McLennan County Jail, but is expected to be transferred to the William P. Hobby Unit to face charges in Marlin.

McLennan County Deputies were working to support the Falls County Sheriff’s Office in their search for the suspect. The FCSO had a person of interest from the beginning, but sought help once they received intel on the identity of the shooter. Nearly 30 units from FCSO, MCFO, and the Waco Police Department were on the scene.
