Wednesday Study Club holds meeting to celebrate Valentine’s Day

The Wednesday Study Club met Feb. 12 at the First United Methodist Church to celebrate Valentine’s Day early with a concert of love songs from the last half of the 20th Century played by Steve Slovacek, FUMC pianist.

He played 16 songs from single artists, groups and musicals. Carol Stock, WSC president, introduced each song, telling what year it was from and who memorably sang it.

Stock called the meeting to order and then introduced Slovacek.

In the business meeting the minutes were approved as emailed. Sharon Skupin handed out the treasurer’s report, which was accepted as presented.

In committee reports, Norma Burns reminded the members that the March meeting would be a field trip to Hearne to visit Camp Hearne, a POW camp from World War II.

The group will possibly visit the old Train Depot and eat at Mary’s or the Old Post Office in Hearne. The group is to meet at 9 a. m. at the library for the trip. The address for a new member Mary Pratt was given to those members who needed it for their yearbooks.

Mary Ann Mitchell showed the scrapbook she had made to display and preserve the pictures the RHS Memorial Hall has of Mary and Byron Stubbs. The book is divided into three parts: the first part being pictures of Mary, the second pictures of Mary and Byron, and the third the Christmas cards that Byron made every year and Mary addressed and sent out. Sheryl Fuchs reported she is continuing to work on the WSC scrapbook for this year and took several pictures at the meeting.

The yearbook policy was finalized and approved. No Rosebud High School yearbooks from 1946 or earlier will be for sale. Yearbooks after 1946 will be for sale for $50, only if there are more than three copies and someone asks to buy one. A policy was also adopted by an executive order by Stock that articles connected with Rosebud, but not Rosebud High School, be given to Preservation Rosebud.

Stock reported on the cost of replacing the blinds in the library. At the conclusion of her report, Stock was authorized to deal with providers to install new mini-blinds.

Additional topics discussed included renovation of the restrooms, which is still in the planning stage, and genealogy research.

Skupin moved for adjournment and Mitchell seconded.

Members moved to the church parlor for refreshments served by the hostesses, Janice Ballard, Judy Smith and Stock. The serving table was covered with a beautiful red and white Valentine quilt made by Smith. Refreshments included homemade chicken salad, also by Smith, a mixed fruit salad, a broccoli salad, crackers and small croissants, heart-shaped cookies and small squares of chocolate cake with chocolate icing. Other tables were covered with red tablecloths with decorative hearts scattered on them.

Others attending were Becky Meacham, Karen Koslosky, Pat Runcie, Linda Bernsen, Ann Sonntag, Doris Hoelscher, Candy Fikes, Beth Allen and Annette Engel.
