Wednesday Study Club makes final preparations for 75th D Brown Library reception

The Wednesday Study Club met on April 10, 2024, at the D Brown Library with eleven members present. Pat Runcie called the meeting to order.  Flag pledges were recited with an invocation given by Norma Burns.

The main order of business was to update everyone on the reception preparations.  Earlier in the month, Carol Stock sent out formal invitations to city and county officials.  Mary Ann Mitchell printed flyers, which members took to hand deliver to various businesses in town.  Mitchell also had napkins printed in red “75th Anniversary, D Brown Library, 1949-2024.”  Mitchell handed out clear cellophane cookie bags and members placed imprinted stickers marking the anniversary on them. The bags will be used to distribute cookies at the anniversary reception.  Westphalia Roots will provide live arrangements for the oak serving table and also in the foyer of the library.  Mitchell is preparing decanters with silk floral arrangements for individual tables.  Runcie organized purchase and preparation of the charcuterie cup food.

Local craftsman, Bryan Arispe, has nearly completed refurbishing the large oak table.   City Administrator Ken Murray has several plans to beautify the library before the reception, including trimming shrubs, cleaning flower beds, and buffing floors.

Members were also updated about the Golden Years Reunion, with over 30 former students visiting the Memorial Room on Saturday April 8.

The meeting was adjourned, and members enjoyed refreshments of chicken salad served with crackers, a  fruit and vegetable tray, dips, chips, molasses pecan muffins and mint brownies. Hostesses were Burns, Diane Pagel, and Linda Bernsen.

The next meeting will be May 8 when Stock will present “The Year in Review”.  Everyone is asked to bring a salad for lunch and encouraged to bring a guest as well.
