Westphalia Roots shares flowers and joy at WSC meeting

The Wednesday Study Club met on Oct. 11 at the D Brown Library with 16 members and guests present.  Pat Runcie called the meeting to order, led flag pledges and gave the invocation.

Norma Burns introduced the program speaker, Debby Meyer of Westphalia Roots.

Meyer’s business came about through her faith in God. It began with an ill child, the Austin School for the Blind, a greenhouse, and the marriage of that child.  She also felt that God was telling her to spread “JOY” with flowers and that is what Meyer is doing, creating a very successful flower business.

She calls herself the flower farm(her) and enjoys showing people how to take vegetation in their yards and create simple but lovely arrangements. She grows many flowers from seeds including zinnias and sunflowers and also plants tubers and bulbs.  She has weathered storms that have taken the roof off of her greenhouse and also this summer’s drought. She gladly plans the floral arrangements for weddings and uses flowers that she has grown.

She also enjoys taking flowers to The Ronald McDonald House and nursing homes where she is able to spread “JOY.”

Meyer created two arrangements with the flowers she brought and two WSC members were the lucky recipients. Meyer’s business is located off FM 3369 with a sign showing Westphalia Roots. The best way to contact her business is through her email address of westphalia.roots@gmail.com.

In business, Candy Fikes, Mary Frances Glass, and Sharon Skupin shared information about memorial books for various members and spouses. Fikes handed out a survey for members to indicate their favorite authors and topics of interest in order to provide better book selections at the library.  There was also discussion about trimming the large oak tree in front of the library.

Runcie shared information about the November field trip to Homestead Village at Elm Mott.  We will have lunch at the Homestead Café and then a carriage ride to view the area.

A black and white checked runner adorned the large oak table. A white lantern centered the table along with vases of sunflowers. Other tables were adorned in a similar fashion. Hostesses Annette Engel, Patsy Garrett, and Ann Sonntag served Mexican spaghetti, salad, bread sticks, Sock it to Me Cake, and molasses spice cookies.

The next meeting will be the field trip to Homestead Village in Elm Mott on Nov. 8, 2023.
