Year in Review presented at May Wednesday Study Club Meeting

The Wednesday Study Club met on May 8, at the D Brown Library with 16 members and guests present.  Pat Runcie called the meeting to order and flag pledges were recited along with A Collect for Club Women  written by Mary Stewart.  Runcie recognized guests Mary Pratt and Tami Polk.

Carol Stock gave members a Year in Review as she showed them the scrapbook she had created.  Members were reminded of the variety of activities including  September’s Back to School lunch bag along with committees formed for the 75th anniversary reception.  October’s visit by Debby Meyer from Westphalia Roots let members realize new ways to decorate with flowers and greenery.

The November Homestead Village visit and lunch at the Café was a delightful field trip.  December’s ornament exchange gave each member a beautiful new ornament for their tree.

Major plans for the anniversary began to be formulated in January.  Mary Ann Mitchell provided many examples of invitations, flyers, napkins, cookie bag stickers, along with centerpieces.

Mary Frances Glass’ book review in February certainly did not disappoint.  The book, “The Wedding Dress Sewing Circle” told about numerous World War II happenings.

Stock showed the Power Point program “If These Walls Could Talk”  at the March meeting and it will be shown at the 75th Anniversary Reception.  April’s meeting was the final countdown to the anniversary.  The 75th Anniversary Reception was held in rather stormy weather, but those who ventured out enjoyed the fellowship.  Runcie and Stock were also interviewed by Channel 25 KXXV that day, and our library received some very good publicity. Stock suggested several library updates that the WSC could help with.

In committee reports, Sharon Skupin will purchase books that have been requested by the book committee and by Librarian Hughes.  Judy and Owen Smith are donating books in the “Hank the Cowboy” series to fill in with those that the library does not have.

Runcie presented a donation that was given by Bea Baca.  Runcie read a congratulatory note from Laura Bush for the 75th Anniversary.  She also read a thank you note from Nan Hensel Bailey.  Runcie plans to frame the Proclamation from Mayor Marlene Zipperlen, the Proclamation from Governor Greg Abbott, and the congratulatory note from   Laura Bush and will possibly locate them in the library foyer for everyone to see as they enter.

Runcie read the slate of officers for the coming two-year term to include:

President Carol Stock, Vice President Norma Burns, 2nd Vice President Candy Fikes, Secretary Beth Allen, Treasurer Sharon Skupin, and Parliamentarian Judy Smith.

There was discussion to create additional standing committee positions to include Historian, Historian Assistant, and Scrapbook Manager.  This will require two readings and will be voted on at the September meeting.  If approved, those positions will be filled by Mary Ann Mitchell, Karen Koslosky, and Sheryl Fuchs respectively.

Courtesy and Telephone position will be filled by Janice Ballard.  The Library Book Committee will include Judy Smith, Linda Bernsen, and Sharon Skupin.

Runcie thanked all of the members who helped with the 75th Anniversary Reception.  Amid lack of power, rainstorms, and tornado watches, approximately 40 people attended the event and Channel 25 KXXV was there to film the program.  Their 10 o’clock newscast provided a very informative view of our library complex.

The beautifully refurbished oak table was centered with a white cutwork cloth that held a spring arrangement of dogwood flowers and ivy surrounded by rabbits.  Members enjoyed an array of salads including chicken salad, pea salad, pasta salad, and lettuce salad.  There was a  Jello salad and a Snicker salad along with cookies.  The next meeting will be Sept. 11, 2024.
