Young Eagles land again this weekend

The City of Marlin will host Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 34 at the Marlin Municipal Airport on Nov. 6. This is the Second-Annual Young Eagles Rally, which is designed to introduce youth in the area to the various opportunities within aviation fields.

The excitement will start at 8 a.m. with the arrival of mostly homebuilt planes, some of which that will land on Marlin’s New City Lake, a few commercial built planes, and a handful of flying history pieces complements of the Commemorative Air Force and other collectors. Also in attendance will be several representatives from branches of the armed forces, instructors from TSTC- Waco’s Aviation College, and recruiters for American Airlines. Career spotlights will include piloting, avionics and mechanical diagnosis and repair, air traffic controller and ground crew careers, and more.

Young Eagles flights will begin around 10:30 a.m., where youth ages 8-17 can take a 15-minute ride in one of the EAA planes at no charge. Preregistering guarantees a flight at the event. The hope is that experiencing flight first-hand will encourage them to pursue the beginning steps toward an enjoyable career in the aviation industry.

“The airline industry is a wonderful career,” Chris Sims of EAA said. “I’ve been flying for almost 30 years, and I enjoy it immensely. On top of that, the pay is astounding too, and it’s only going to get better. These youth can make serious money and have fun doing it. We’re just trying to get them to see the potential.”

Arrive early for a complimentary breakfast (while supplies last), but late-comers can purchase soul food from DK and Mom’s, tacos from Taquisa Waco, or iced treats from Kona Ice. There will also be a play area for younger children, and of course the lake is open to shore fishing.

The City of Marlin would like to thank the event sponsors: H-E-B, Keith Ace Hardware, Gafford Auto Parts, CEFCO, Falls County, and especially EAA for their support.
