Steve Slovacek provides Christmas tunes for Study Club
The Rosebud Wednesday Study Club met at the First United Methodist Church on Dec. 8, 2021, with 14 members and guests in attendance.
Beth Allen called the meeting to order, with the invocation given by Mary Frances Glass. Flag pledges were recited.
Glass introduced Steve Slovacek who provided the program by playing a selection of Christmas songs. Carol Stock introduced the selections and sang several including “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas.”
Slovacek then played a medley of sentimental Christmas songs including “The Christmas Song,” “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,” and “Silver Bells.” WSC members joined in singing “White Christmas,” “O Come All Ye Faithful,” and “Sing We Now of Christmas.” Slovacek continued with “Mary Did You Know,” “In the Bleak Midwinter,” and ended the concert with the inspiring “O Holy Night.” WSC members enjoyed the Christmas music in the lovely, decorated sanctuary.
In committee reports, Norma Burns reminded members of the workday on Jan. 12 in the Memorial Room of the D Brown Library.
Librarian Kelly Hughes gave a report via telephone call. She updated that the Home Depot grant for landscaping was denied. She has applied for the American Library Association $10,000 grant which focuses on the humanities.
Because of COVID, many in house programs were discontinued. This grant will allow for activities like children’s reading programs, speakers, displays, and exhibits to be reinstated. Notification will take place in February 2022. Notification of the Penguin grant will take place Dec. 17.
Hughes stated that she is planning a Christmas activity at the library on December 21 to include a movie, story time, a craft, and refreshments. She already has seven children signed up and would like to get 20. November circulation included 160 items checked out along with 96 patron visits. Hughes has also signed up four new patrons. She continues to have homeschoolers coming in to use materials.
Refreshments were served in the First United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall. The table was decorated at one end with a wire tree containing Texas Capitol ornaments. The other end of the table displayed tin cutout Christmas trees and a plaque that read, “Wisemen Still Seek Him.”
Members enjoyed chicken salad rollups, salad, other cheese and meat rollups, quiches, shrimp flatbreads, mini sweet rolls and cranberry cookies. Hostesses were Glass, Mary Lou Kasner, and Diane Pagel.
Next meeting will be a workday in the Memorial Room at the D Brown Library on Jan. 12.
