End of Year Meeting for Wednesday Study Club

The Wednesday Study Club met on May 10, 2023, at the D Brown Library with 13 members present.

Pat Runcie called the meeting to order and flag pledges were recited.  Members recited A Collect for Club Women written by Mary Stewart. Runcie introduced Carol Stock who gave members a Year in Review as she showed the scrapbook she had created.

Members were reminded of the variety of activities ranging from a September update from City Manager Ken Murray along with a library update from Kelly Hughes. Cheryl Walker, retired Milam County Extension Agent shared decluttering ideas in October. November’s field trip to Westphalia to visit the Little School Museum and Convent impressed members with their collection of wedding pictures. December’s ornament exchange showed both beautiful and unusual ornaments.  Members worked In the Memorial Room in January. A delightful time was had by members with February’s Valentine Bingo.

WSC members prepared for the Golden Years Reunion in March.  Mary Frances Glass’s Thunder Dog book review inspired everyone in April.  Stock reminded members that we hope to have the military albums finished in time for the library celebration in 2024.  Stock ended by reminding members to sign up to be hostesses and to suggest programs for next year.

In his absence, Sharon Skupin read a report from City Manager Ken Murray. He has been working to get the Rosebud sewer plant in compliance and succeeded  in clearing up the water, which was thought to be an impossible task.  There is a $1 million rebuild to the plant in the works. A new Police Chief from Arizona has been hired and he seems to be a good fit for Rosebud. Applications are being accepted for a library assistant. Murray closed his report by thanking the Wednesday Study Club for their support of the D Brown Library as well as the city of Rosebud.

Runcie discussed the 2024 library celebration and a date for the event.  After discussion, Sunday, April 28, 2024, was set as the date for the 75th Anniversary of the D Brown Library.  Committees included Decorations: Mary Ann Mitchell, Pam Parcus, Janice Ballard; Invitations: Skupin, Norma Burns; Publicity: Stock; Registration: Glass; Refreshments: Candy Fikes, Judy Smith, Glass.

The oak table was centered with a vase of silk wildflowers and other tables were decorated with pint jars of colorful wildflowers including Indian Blanket, Black Eyed Susan, and purple thistle created by Stock. Members brought their favorite salad to share including lettuce salad, pasta salad, chicken salad, carrot salad, pimento cheese salad,  along with deviled eggs and crackers. Runcie delighted everyone with her Charcuterie cups that included meats, cheeses, pickles, fruit, nuts, and pretzels and crackers.  Tarts with lemony cheese filling topped with  fruit  along with nutty crackers completed the lunch.  This was the last meeting for the year and next year’s meetings will begin on Sept. 13, 2023.
