Basketball Weekly for Central Region
District play is back in action after the Christmas break. Teams are on the floor hustling as the second round of district play is nearing. Playoffs are just about a month away.
Cameron
The Yoemen (10-10, 21) picked up two district wins this past week. Cameron defeated Thall on Tuesday, Jan. 6, 62-50, and Rogers in a nail-biter 41-39 on Friday night, Jan. 9.
“I am proud of the consistent growth that dates way back to the summer,” Coach Marlon Miller said. “A lot of the athletes would attend open-gym pretty regularly and I believe this is where the growth initially started.”
When asked about the rest of district play, Miller said, “I want to continue to see growth game by game and be able to keep the athletes engaged with our game-plan and how we want to play Yoe Basketball.
Miller noted that this group of young men have been great to work with on and off the court.
“The community has done a great job at raising these young men and I think that is more important than the sport of basketball,” Miller ended.
The Lady Yoe (11-13, 0-5) fell to Thrall 65-40 and 52-46 this past week.
Cameron had a bye night on Tuesday, Jan. 13. They will travel to Lexington on Friday, Jan. 16, before heading to Rockdale next Tuesday, Jan. 20.
Thorndale
The Bulldogs (17-4, 20) picked up two big wins this past week. They defeated McDade by sixty, 89-29, on Tuesday, Jan. 6. Case McDaniel led the way with 20 points. Kale Meadors added 15, Wyatt Betak 14, Garrett Schramm 10, Ethan Schramm 9, Tristan Garcia 6, Tyryn Garcia 5, Logan Ferguson 4, and Shiner Thurman 3.
On Friday, Jan. 9, the Bulldogs took on Little River Academy on the road and brought home victory in a close one, 47-45. Tristan Garcia led the way with 15 points. Ethan Schramm added 10, Wyatt Betak 8, and Case McDaniel and Kale Meadors 7 each.
“We have managed a tough schedule so far,” Coach Michael Williams said. “We are ranked #9 in the state in Class 2A. Our team plays very hard, is coachable, plays team basketball, and is willing to continue to learn, grow, and improve. We are hoping to win our third district championship in a row.”
The Lady Bulldogs (1611, 3-1) knocked off the McDade Lady Bulldogs 53-19 in district play last Tuesday night. They had a bye not on Friday, Jan. 9.
“We have great kids. They play hard, they compete and they are coachable,” Coach Doug Franklin said. “Because of those attributes we have had a lot of success this season and I am incredibly proud of them. I enjoy these girls and everything they do and achieve on the court and in the classroom.”
When asked about his goal for the rest of district play, he said, “We would like to win district. We are currently sitting second. We do have a bit of an injury issue at the moment and we will see how that affects us going forward. Also, we want to be the one seed district representative for the big school division entering the playoffs.”
Thorndale hosted Granger on Tuesday, Jan. 13. They will host Holland on Friday night, Jan. 16, before hosting Bartlett next Tuesday, Jan. 20 Milano
The Eagles (2-11, 1-2) went 1-1 this past week. They defeated Holland 5853 on Tuesday, Jan, 6, before falling to Bartlett on Friday night, 40-28.
The Lady Eagles (4-22, 1-4) lost to Holland 40-28 and Bartlett 36-23 this past week.
Milano had a bye on Tuesday night, Jan. 13. They will travel to Rosebud-Lott on Friday, Jan. 16, before heading to McDade next Tuesday, Jan. 20.
Rosebud-Lott
The Cougars (13-8, (12) fell to Granger last Tuesday, Jan. 6, 57-43, before defeating Holland 56-22 on Friday night, Jan. 9.
The Lady Cougars (1310, 2-2) went 1-1 this past week as well. They lost to Granger 33-20 before taking a win over Holland 4922.
Rosebud-Lott played Bartlett on Tuesday, Jan.13. They will host Milano on Friday, Jan. 16, before having a bye night next Tuesday, Jan. 20.
Marlin
The Bulldogs (6-16, 2--0) took two big wins this past week, knocking-off Riesel 56-32 on Tuesday night and then Axtell 89-29 on Friday night.
The Lady Bulldogs (149, 4-0) won both district contests this past week. They defeated Riesel 62-55 and then Axtell 61-56.
Marlin played Chilton on Tuesday night, Jan. 13. They will host Mart on Friday night, Jan. 16, and then Moody next Tuesday, Jan. 20.
Chilton
The Pirates (5-7, 2-1) defeated Moody 57-48 and Bruceville-Eddy 59-28 this past week.
The Lady Pirates (16-9, 3-1) went 2-0 this past week. They defeated Moody 59-19 and Bruceville-Eddy 64-17.
Chilton plates Marlin on Tuesday night, Jan. 13. They will travel to Riesel on Friday, Jan. 16, and then go to Axtell next Tuesday, Jan. 20.
