Andre “Andy” Herzog

Andre “Andy” Herzog, age 68, of Westphalia passed from this life during the early morning hours of Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2019, at a care facility.

Born on the fourth day of April 1951 in Marlin, Andy was the son of Adolph and Mary (Buckholt) Herzog.

Andy has lived his entire life in Westphalia. He graduated from Lott High School in his early years. After school he spent six years in the United States Army National Guard as a paratrooper. Andy married Diane Svajda on March 18, 1972, in Cyclone and together they raised two daughters and one son.

Andy was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #13902 in Westphalia. Andy spent over 29 years working for Alcoa until his retirement. He made many friends throughout his time with Alcoa. He also worked tirelessly for many years as the bar manager and then as the hall manager for the Westphalia Parish Hall.

Andy loved old farm tractors and machinery. When not working on an old tractor you could find Andy at the hall working on something that needed to be fixed or planning for an upcoming wedding or hall event; he was very dedicated to his church and community.  Andy was also a member of the Texas Early Day Tractor and Engine Association for many years.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Adolph and Mary; as well as one granddaughter, Veronica Bravo; and one great-granddaughter, Grayce Portillo.

Andy leaves behind to cherish his memory his wife, Diane Herzog; daughters, Connie and Karen Herzog; and son, Russell Herzog, all of Westphalia. He also leaves his grandchildren, Adam Portillo Jr., Aaron Mark as well as Keith, Jakob and Tyler Herzog.  Great-grandchildren surviving include NiKayla Bravo-Hodges and Raylynn, Grayson and Payton Portillo; as well as one sister, Frances Ellison of Little River-Academy.

A very special thank you is extended to Carly Good and Tori Castillo for all the love and support given to Andy before and throughout his illness.

A funeral service for Andy will be held at the Westphalia Parish Hall on Monday, Dec. 2, 2019, at 10 a.m. with Deacon Bill Smetana officiating.  The burial will follow immediately after the service in the St. Mary’s Cemetery in Westphalia.  The family will be excepting visitors at the hall on Sunday, Dec. 1, 2019, from 6-8 p.m.  The Rosary will be recited starting at 7 p.m.  It will be led by Deacon Charlie Wright.

Hewett-Arney Funeral Home of Temple is entrusted with the arrangements.
