Carl Leroy Fick

Rosebud native Carl Leroy Fick died on February 26 in Houston. He was born on a farm near Rosebud, Falls County, Texas on March 8, 1931, the son of Carl and Alma Fick. He graduated from Rosebud High School in 1948 and went to Lon Morris College in Jacksonville, Texas where he met his wife Wava Lee Caddenhead. He graduated from the University of Texas with a degree in Civil Engineering. He and Wava were married in Austin in 1952. He served in the U.S. Army from 1951-1953. His first job was in Los Angeles, but he missed Texas so the family moved to Houston in 1956. He worked at Brown & Root until his retirement in 1996, and continued consulting until 2006. He oversaw many projects, including the Livingston Dam, Lake Pontchartrain Bridge, Longhorn Dam, and Canyon Hydro Electric Project. He and his family joined Beneke Methodist Church, and later Westbury United Methodist Church where he was a member for 54 years. Carl taught the Harmony Sunday School Class and served in many leadership positions at the church. He was awarded the Texas Annual Conference Lay Evangelism Award and was the Alumni of the Year from Lon Morris College. His great joys were his family, gardening and sharing the bounty of his labor, studying American history, and University of Texas football.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Wava Lee Caddenhead Fick and his children: Dale Campbell, Gloria Williams, Melissa Kamerbeek, Carl Milton Fick, Leah Tzmourakas, Jana McVey and Randall Fick, 22 grandchildren and two great grandchildren; his four sisters Doris Rast, Edith Smith, Irene Haas and Janet Quiram and numerous nieces and nephews. Memorials can be made to Westbury United Methodist Church or to Randall Fick’s missionary work at WorldVenture (720-283-2000 ext.2000 and ask to give to Randall Fick).
