Leland “Wayne” Mercer

Leland “Wayne” Mercer went home on Sept. 6, 2021, surrounded by his family.

Wayne was born on Pond Creek in his beloved Falls County to Oscar and Neta Mae Mercer on March 28, 1939. As a graduate of Lott High School, he went to work for the “phone company,” taking a break to serve this country as a member of the United States Army from 1962-1968. He returned to Falls County and worked the rest of his career for Southwestern Bell as a lineman until retirement in 1991.

Wayne was preceded in death by his parents, and his sister Catherine “Cat” Eustice.

He is survived by his daughter, Hollie Baldridge and her husband Stephen; as well as his four grandchildren, Hobson, Penn, Izzie, and Andie of Belton - who all adored him.

Wayne was a lover of chicken fried steak, gardening, buckling dogs in seat belts in his truck, black coffee, western movies, buying dessert, and being generous to all around him.

Wayne joked around and laughed all the way up to his last few minutes on earth; talking about college football, his grandkids, and singing Jesus Loves Me. At his request, no funeral will be held.  There will be a brief graveside service on Oct. 9 at 10 a.m. at Clover Hill cemetery in Lott, with his grandchildren officiating.

If you are reading this, Wayne would want you to know that “you sure look nice today.” He will be greatly missed.
