Animals on the loose

During the past 20 years as a newspaper publisher I have had the unfortunate responsibility to report on many, many cases of animal cruelty. Some reports were clearcut, some were like the one recently reported in the Rosebud News.

Do you have the right to shoot a stray animal on your property? According to the Robertson County Sheriff ’s office the answer is yes. If the animal is of a threatening manner, or in a recent case I covered, harassing livestock you most certainly have the right to shoot the animal to protect your property, livestock and yourself.

I do not know the facts of this current case, I’m not sure where the man shot the animal or why, but I do know that to be arrested for the act means that the local police department believe something criminal occured.
