On The Back Porch

A Cowboys Poem

Christmas time is very near and we prepare to celebrate the birth of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ and at the same time enjoy the festivities with family and friends. We often think of Christmas with idyllic imagination. These scenes vary from person to person depending upon their background and their childhood memories. I can close my eyes and visualize a room warmed by a crackling fire in a large fireplace. A manger scene has been placed upon the mantle. In a corner, stands a large Christmas tree decorated with shiny ornaments, strings of popcorn, glittering ice sickles, and a glowing angel perched at the top. Beneath the tree, there are packages of all shapes and sizes wrapped in colorful Christmas paper. Lots and lots of packages! Along the wall, you find a side table ladened with Christmas cakes, candy, and cookies. Wonderful aromas fill the room, while the old folks and the children’s faces have big smiles of anticipation. I can still hear my Ol’ Daddy say,”Would you just look at what that Ol’ Scallywag put in my boots…sticks and rocks and cowchips!” WOW! What great memories. The Christmas of yesteryear was a bit more simple than we experience in today’s world, but the excitement is still there! Well enough of reminiscing, let’s finish that poem.
