The best prayer I have heard in a long time

Heavenly Father, help us to remember that the jerk who cut us off in traffic last night is a single mom who worked nine hours that day and was rushing home to cook dinner, help with homework, do the laundry and spend a few precious moments with her children.

Remind us, O Lord, that the scary looking bum, begging for money in the same spot every day is a slave to addictions that we can only imagine in our worst nightmares.

Please Lord, help us to remember that the old couple walking annoyingly slow through the store aisles and blocking our shopping progress are savoring the moment, knowing that based on the biopsy report she got back last week, this will be the last year that they will go shopping together.

Help us to remember that my close friend who seemingly ignored us was in a whole other world as he was trying to figure out how he ws going to pay all of his bills for the month in this ever-tightening economy. Help us to remember that he was trying to hold on to his job and not be laid off like some of his buddies were last week.

Heavenly Father, please remind us us each day that all the wonderful gifts in life come from you. But the greatest of all the gifts that we enjoy is love. It is not enough to share that love with those we hold dear. Open our hearts not just to those who are close to us, but to all humanity. Let us be slow to judge and quick to forgive, show patience, empathy and love.

In Jesus name, Amen.

“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above and cometh down from the Father of lights with whom is no varition neither shadow of turning.” (James 1:17)
