Do we give God our best?

Some time ago there was a rich man that wanted to help a carpenter and his family. The rich man hired the carpenter to build a house. The rich man went on a long journey and was gone for quite some time.

The carpenter said, “My boss is away so I can use shoddy materials and cut down on supporting work and no one but me will ever know.”

So the carpenter built a cheap and shoddy house. Eventually the rich man returned home and went to visit the carpenter.

The carpenter told the rich man, “Here is your house all finished just like you instructed.”

“Good,” said the rich man, “ and here are the keys and deed to you and your families new home.”

Over the years the carpenter grieved because he used cheap material. He realized that he only cheated himself.

Each day of our lives we have an opportunity to give God our very best. We can give Him the best of our time, our ability and even our money. God tells us that we are just helping ourselves when we give our best to Him.

Jesus said “Lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

(Matthew 6:20-21) If we are not giving God our best we are only hurting ourselves.
