God looks upon the heart
We spend a lot of time trying to look good. We want to make a good impression upon others. We want others to have positive thoughts about us. And there is nothing wrong with that!
As humans it is our nature to look upon the outward appearance of others whether it is good or bad. But God is just the opposite. God doesn’t care whether every hair is in place on our head and God does not care if we wear name brand clothing. God is much deeper than that.
God says, “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are my ways your ways.” (Isaiah 55:8)
God gives us a good example of this in I Samuel 15 and 16. God sent Samuel to Bethleham to find Jessie and choose a new king for Isreal from one of his eight sons. When Eliab came in, Samuel was just sure that he was the one.
But in I Samuel 16:7 the Bible tells us, “The Lord said to Samuel, look not on his countance or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him; for the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the lord looks upon the heart.”
What a great lesson for us. Especially today. It is not on the outside of a man that counts, it is on the inside! Remember the song we sing in Vacation Bible School. “Red and yellow, black and white, we are all precious in God’s sight.
