A safe landing
On the evening of Dec. 29, 1972, Eastern Airlines Flight 401 crashed into the Florida Everglades, killing 101 people.
Whenever something tragic like this happens, it grabs our attention because so many lives are affected by these tragedies. But what makes this crash even more tragic is the fact that it was completely avoidable.
The plane was preparing to land in Miami, Fla., when the co-pilot noticed that a light bulb on the instrument panel was not working.
He tried to replace the burned out bulb but he was unsuccessful. So the pilot puts the plane in auto pilot and goes to help the co-pilot.
Somehow in the process the auto pilot was accidently disengaged. While the pilot and the co-pilot worked on replacinng a burned out light bulb, the plane slowly decended and crashed. Think of it...101 people died because more attention was given to a burned out bulb than flying and landing the airplane!
But sadly enough, everyday mistakes are more monumental than that take place.
How many people devote their attention to things of lesser importance?
Some day many will meet God unprepared because they gave their attention to lesser things. Jobs, families, entertainment, social status and wealth all have their place but not at the expence of a safe landing eternally.
The bumper sticker on a car read; God is my co-pilot. If that is true, then we need to change seats.
