What’s wrong?

Chalkboard

In my opinion it seems that in today’s age we are constantly going away from things that were good for us all.

Food distributors are telling us all the things they add to our food supply is actually good for us. They tell us that those additives are what make our food last longer and supposedly taste better.

However, if you have never tasted beef, pork, or chicken without the preservatives then you have missed out on the true flavor that the product has to offer.

Growing up we never used those extra additives and somehow it seems we always had meat in the smokehouse and it always tasted better. It just didn’t spoil like things do today.

I bought a pound of ground beef at a cost of $4.98 a pound, and had plans to make hamburgers with it that evening when I got home.

However plans changed and I forgot I had left it in the bottom part of the refrigerator and when I discovered it the next day it had already started turning brown.

Less than 24 hours and it had begun to spoil. Those new additives aren’t apparently intended to extend the life of the food merely make it more presentable to the customer. If I freeze it I have to make sure it’s airtight if I don’t it gets frost burn or ices up, then it’s a total loss.

Things just don’t keep like they did when we didn’t add so much stuff to them. Even can goods have an expiration date on them.

If you can foods correctly they will keep forever as long as the container is airtight. I canned some pears 12 years ago, the way my mother taught me and those pears are still some of the best preserves I’ve ever tasted.

Not just because I was the one who canned them but the process my mother used to preserve them still works. Why haven’t companies learned her technique or is it that like sickness, there’s more money to be made from treating a disease than curing it.

Well I’m just rambling I guess because I so wanted that burger tonight but it’s not happening. I’m out of luck unless I want to drive 5 or 8 miles to get one.

Think I’ll just have breakfast for dinner.
