Would roses cost a lot mister?

Henry Penn, the Boston florist who originated the slogan, “Say it with flowers,” told a story, how one morning two boys and a girl came into his florist shop and said: “We are the flower committee and we would like some nice yellow flowers, sir. Do you have any yellow flowers? He would like them better if they were yellow. He had a yellow sweater.”

“Are they for a funeral?” Mr. Penn asked.

The children nodded “yes” as they held back their tears.

“She is his sister,” one of the little boys said. “He was a good kid. We were all playing in the street. A truck came along and we all saw it happen.”

The other little boy added, “All of us kids took up a collection and we collected eighteen cents. Would roses cost a lot mister? Yellow roses?”

Henry Penn, touched by the story and the loyality of the kids, said, “I have some nice yellow roses that I am selling for eighteen cents just this morning.”

The sympathic florist accepted the eighteen cents that the committee collected and they left with the dozen yellow roses. Mr. Penn said, “I felt uplifted for days. I had been given the inexpressable privilege of sharing something.”

As Christians, we too have that enexpressible privilege of sharing.

“We are ambassadors for Christ,” (II Corinthians 5:20) as we have this treasure in earthen vessels.” (II Corinthians 4:7). We should want everyone to know “the peace that passes all understanding,” (Philippians 4:7) and with love and compassion, we share the knowledge of Christ.
