Wrong way Regiel

On Jan. 1, 1929, the Rose Bowl was played by Georgia Tech and the University of California. Midway through the second quarter a Georgia Tech player fumbled the ball and it was recovered by a California player by the name of Roy Regiel.

Roy Regiel scooped up the ball and headed for the goal line. But much to his surprise he ran 69 yards in the wrong direction until one of his own players tackled him on the one yard line.

He would have scored for the other team if it hadn’t been for a player on his own team making the tackle. No one ever let him live it down. For the rest of his life he was known as “WRONG WAY REGIEL.”

But Will Rogers came to the defense of that player when he wrote these words in his column: “Why heap your criticism upon this unfortunate fellow for running the ball in the wrong direction? Is it not a fact that the vast majority of us are headed in the wrong direction and running top speed toward the wrong goal?”

Jesus tells us, “Enter ye in at the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction and many there be which go in there at. For narrow is the gate and strait is the way that leads unto life and few there be that find it.” (Matthew 7:13-14)
