Rep. Orr Sponsors & Passes Bill To Keep Bathrooms Separate By Biological Sex
AUSTIN — State Representative Angelia Orr sponsored Senate Bill 8 on the floor of the Texas House, ultimately passing it with a vote of 86 - 41.
Senate Bill 8 requires individuals to use multi-occupancy private spaces— including restrooms, locker rooms, shower rooms, and changing rooms—in accordance with their biological sex, applying this standard to schools, correctional facilities, and any facility funded by state or local tax dollars.
“When it comes to choosing between my little girl’s safety and privacy and a grown man’s bathroom preferences, I’m going to choose my little girl every time, and I would hope that you would do the same,” Orr said as she closed her layout of the bill on Thursday. “Today I am here representing biological truth, and I am speaking up for 15 million Texas women and girls.”
Senate Bill 8 was passed as part of the 2nd called special session by Governor Abbott, and it is part of a number of bills passed by the legislature in the last two weeks. Other bills passed from the Governor’s call include flood relief for the Hill Country, a pause on big water exports out of rural Texas aquifers, congressional redistricting, STAAR test reform, and a crackdown on abortion pill trafficking.
Orr represents House District 13, which includes Bosque, Falls, Hill, Leon, Freestone, Limestone, and McLennan counties. A committed public servant, wife, mother, and small businesswoman, she continues to stand for the values that matter most to the people of HD 13 and rural Texas.
