Cougars back in action after quarantine

The Rosebud-Lott Cougars are (1-1) in district play after a couple of tough opponents. Both teams were back to work this week, after a 10-day quarantine over the holiday break.

The boys pulled out their best on Jan. 8 against the Chilton Pirates, beating the seamen 44-39, despite not having two of the top scorers and rebounders on the team. They took a close loss to the 'well coached' Waco Meyer Ravens just the next day, according to the  Rosebud-Lott Basketball Twitter account. They came out just two points short, at 55-57.

The Lady Cougars also resumed the court this week to face the Ravens on January 6, coming out on top with a score of 51-34. They too trumped the Pirates a couple days later, coming home with a district win of 35-27. With these two victories under their belt, the Lady Cougars have taken fourth place in district, sitting at (3-1) in district play and (7-6) overall.

Players Zakiya Larkin, Jonathan Adamez (Sr.), and Jamarquis Johnson (Fr.) were named Athletes of the Week in recognition of the work put in on the court.“Jonathan stepped up against Chilton with 20 points and 10 rebounds,” Coach Marlin Whitfield said. “Jamarquis was called on to start against Waco Meyer and he responded by leading the team in scoring and steals.”

“I’m proud of these young men,” the trainer continued.

Coach Edwards said, “Zakiya played a big role in both district wins this week with her suffocating defense and fierce effort on the boards.”

Both Cougar teams were supposed to play Bruceville-Eddy on Monday, but the winter storm over the weekend delayed the game to a later date. They are set to travel to face the Moody Bearcats on Friday. The girls will play at 5:30 p.m. and the boys at 6:45 p.m.
