Cougars compete at Axtell Tourney
The Rosebud-Lott Cougars baseball team participated in an in-season tournament hosted by Axtell during the weekend of Feb. 27-28. The Cougars finished the weekend with a record of 1-2.
Rosebud-Lott played two games on Thursday, the first was against the Bosqueville Bulldogs. The Cougars fell to Bosqueville in walk off fashion, losing 7-6.
Rosebud-Lott led the Bulldogs 6-5 in the bottom of the seventh inning with one out, and Bosqueville came through with two runs to win the game.
The second game of the day was a matchup with the Clifton Cubs. The Cougars defeated Clifton, winning 13-4. Rosebud-Lott got on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the first inning with two runs to lead 2-0. Carson Layne hit an RBI groundout and Orrin Pomykal doubled to center field, each bringing in one run.
Clifton answered with two runs (one in the second inning and one in the third inning) to tie the game at 2. Rosebud-Lott responded with seven unanswered runs with two in the third inning and five in the fourth inning to pull away 9-2. The Cubs broke the drought in the bottom of the fifth inning with two runs to close the gap to 9-4, but the Cougars responded with four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning with four runs to lead 13-4, which would be the final score. The runs came from a bases-loaded walk from Pomykal and a three RBI double by Pryce Rabroker.
The Cougars amassed 10 hits in the game. Carson Layne drove in five runs on two hits to lead the team past Clifton. Carson Kahlig earned the win on the mound for Rosebud-Lott. The hurler allowed five hits and four runs (three earned) over four innings, striking out two and walking four. Carson Layne tossed one inning of zero-run ball for Rosebud-Lott in relief. The hurler allowed zero hits, striking out none and walking none.
The final game of the weekend for the Cougars was Friday against the host Axtell Longhorns. Rosebud-Lott was defeated by Axtell, losing 7-2.
With this loss, Rosebud-Lott has a record of 5-2.
Up next, the Cougars will participate in an in-season tournament hosted by Thrall during the weekend of March 7-8. They will play two games on Thursday (Clifton at 2 p.m. and Valley Mills at 4 p.m.) and two games on Friday (Leander Rouse JV at 8 a.m. and Crawford at noon).
