Cougars defeat Chilton
The Rosebud-Lott Cougars basketball team hosted the Chilton Pirates on Jan. 20. Rosebud-Lott handily defeated Chilton 63-44.
The Cougars started strong with a layup by Preston Hering (32) off an assist by Clayton Doskocil (3) for an early 4-0 lead, followed with a steal and layup by Kyle Finan (11) for a score of 6-0. Rosebud-Lott didn’t allow points from Chilton until a three point shot with 2 minutes left in the quarter. The Cougars increased their lead with a floater by Doskocil to make the score 12-5. The first quarter ended with Rosebud-Lott leading 14-5.
The Cougars started the second quarter with a layup by Doskocil for a 16-5 edge. Rosebud-Lott continued their hot scoring and grew their lead to 20-7. They would extend it even more with a fastbreak layup by Doskocil to make the score 25-10. Chilton went on a 7-0 run to end the quarter and the Cougars went into halftime ahead 25-17.
"We lost focus,” Coach Marvin Whitfield said. “We got a lead and we lost focus. We were just talking to our guys and slowing them back down, and getting them refocused."
Cougars started the third quarter with a three point shot by Doskocil for a 28-17 lead. Rosebud-Lott began to pull away and scored on a fastbreak layup by Breon Lewis (10) off an assist by Finan to take a convincing 33-19 lead, which was soon followed with a three pointer by Lewis to make it 38-25. The Cougars stayed aggressive and extended their margin to 43-27, which was followed up with a layup by Hering for a whopping 45-29 score. The third quarter ended with Rosebud-Lott winning 47-34.
"We just capitalized,” Whitfield said. “When they tried to press us, we made the right passes and scored layups at the end of the press; and Clayton hit some timely threes, we got them stretched out."
The Cougars opened the fourth quarter with another three pointer by Doskocil to make the score 50-34. Rosebud-Lott stayed aggressive with a layup by Finan to make the score 58-37, and the Cougars went on to win a big way 63-44. With that win, Rosebud-Lott has a record of 21-5 and a district record of 5-1.
