Cougars fall to Frankston in area round of playoffs

The Rosebud-Lott Cougar basketball team fell to the Frankston Indians in the area round of the playoffs on Friday at Leon High School. 

The game was a war but the Cougars were defeated in a hard fought 49-44 loss. Rosebud-Lott still had a fantastic season as they finished as district champions for the first time since the 2016-2017 season. 

Rosebud-Lott competed in the bi-district round of the playoffs on Tuesday, Feb. 22, against the Dawson Bulldogs. 

The Cougars defeated the Bulldogs 63-48. Rosebud-Lott started strong with a three pointer by Breon Lewis (5) to take an early 5-2 lead. The Cougars extended the lead to 9-4 and increased it more on a quick fast break layup by Jamarquis Johnson (1) off an assist by Lewis to make the lead 11-4. The Cougars stayed aggressive with a basket by Easton Fulton (25) making the score 13-7. The first quarter ended with Rosebud-Lott winning 17-13.

The Bulldogs tried to creep back in the game to start the second quarter, but the Cougars responded with a basket by Lewis to make the score 19-15. Dawson continued to claw back and make it a one point game, cutting their deficit to 21-20. The Bulldogs then took the lead 25-23, but Rosebud-Lott answered that with a three pointer by Caleb Butler (20) to take back the lead 26-25. The Cougars kept the lead and went into halftime up 28-25 over Dawson.

The Cougars started the third quarter on a 5-2 run. That run was aided by a layup from Jordan Landrum (3) to increase the lead to 33-28. John Reyna (33) came up big with a tough layup to make the score 37-33. That was followed by a successful three point play by Fulton for a 40-35 lead. The Cougars continued their success on offense from the perimeter with a three pointer by Landrum expand the lead to 45-37. The third quarter ended with Rosebud-Lott ahead of the Bulldogs 46-37.

The fourth quarter started with the Cougars growing their lead to double digits at 48-37. That would be followed with a fast break layup by Landrum to make it a 50-37 lead. The Bulldogs tried to rally back but it was halted by a layup from Reyna to make the score 56-45. Dawson continued to fight back but the Cougars sealed the game with a fast break layup by Lewis to make it a 59-45 lead. Rosebud-Lott held strong and finished the game with a 63-48 victory.
