Cougars get big Homecoming win over Bruceville-Eddy
The Rosebud-Lott Cougars football team hosted the Bruceville-Eddy Eagles on Friday, Oct. 6, for their homecoming game. The Cougars sent the homecoming crowd home happy with a dominant win over the Eagles 61-6.
Rosebud-Lott overpowered the Eagles and showed no mercy from the start of the game, continuing through into halftime leading 35-0. The Cougars continued to dominate in the second half, outscoring Bruceville-Eddy 26-6 to win the game 61-6. A big key to the blowout victory was their amazing defense, who Coach Brandon Hicks praised for their physicality throughout the whole game. They allowed just 12 rushing yards, 111 passing yards, one third down conversion and just six points in the game.
The offense was just as unstoppable. Jamarquis Johnson was terrific, catching three passes for 94 yards and a touchdown along with returning a punt for a touchdown. Jayden Thomas was also impactful, catching three passes for 54 yards and a touchdown. Yahir Mendoza had a great game, rushing for 40 yards and a touchdown. DJ Hicks was incredible, rushing for 69 yards and three touchdowns.
“We were able to give our quarterback some time up front, which was huge for us,” Coach Brandon Hicks said. “Then we cleaned up a lot of execution errors on the outside with the receivers and the quarterbacks. Putting it all together and cleaning up our passing game was great for us. We knew we could establish the run early on and DJ Hicks did a great job. On nights like tonight, sometimes it’s all working, and it’s a lot of fun to coach.”
Freshman quarterback, Pryce Rabroker, played another phenomenal game, throwing for 291 yards and two touchdowns along with two rushing touchdowns.
“There’s no words for it,” Hicks said. “He continues to surprise me on a weekly basis. We know he’s going to have some struggles. We definitely knew we were going to have some of those early on with a tough non district schedule and starting a freshman. So, we kind of decided to take our lumps and let him figure it out as he went, but he’s impressed me at every turn.”
With this victory, the Cougars have a record of 2-4 and a district record of 2-1 and sit in third place in the district.
Up next for Rosebud-Lott, they will host the Bosqueville Bulldogs. The game will be on Friday and kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
