Cougars win two of four at Thrall Tournament

This weekend, the Rosebud-Lott Cougars baseball team participated in an in-season tournament hosted by Thrall. The Cougars finished the tournament winning two games out of four. 

They played just one game on Thursday against the Gatesville Hornets JV team. The Cougars would fall short to Gatesville, losing 4-2. Rosebud-Lott fell behind early and couldn’t come back in defeat. The Hornets scored on a single and an RBI groundout in the first inning.

Gatesville then scored in the second inning on a sacrifice fly and another in the fourth inning on an RBI groundout to give the Cougars a 4-0 deficit. Rosebud-Lott collected two runs in the sixth inning, but it wouldn’t be enough and they would take the 4-2 loss. 

Jeremey Ellison toed the rubber for Rosebud-Lott. He surrendered four runs on five hits over five innings, striking out five. Ellison, Matthew Lopez, Logan Kleypas, and Nolan Kahlig each collected one hit to lead the team. 

The Cougars then played two games on Friday, the first game was the Louise Hornet. Rosebud-Lott obliterated the Hornets 23-5 in a game that lasted and a half innings.

The Cougars survived a push by Louise in the first and second inning where Rosebud-Lott allowed five total runs, but they recovered and pulled away. 

Rosebud-Lott opened up the scoring in the first inning, when Jeremey Ellison singled on a line drive to left field, allowing Nolan Kahlig to come home and score the first run. That followed by a sacrifice fly from Ben Ford and an RBI single from Rawling Barton for an early 3-0 lead. 

The Cougars then put up ten runs in the third inning. Rosebud-Lotts big bats were led by Nolan Kahlig, Breon Lewis, Ellison, Ben Ford, Carson Kahlig, and Rolando Leon, all driving in runs in the frame.

Rosebud-Lott racked up 13 hits. Lewis, Leon, Ellison, and Logan Kleypas each had multiple hits for the team. Lewis led Rosebud-Lott Cougars Varsity with three hits in three at bats. 

Lewis also got the start for Rosebud-Lott on the mound. He lasted two innings, allowing three hits and five runs while striking out six. The next game for the Cougars were the ISBL Austin Waves, and they eked out a close victory 14-12.

In the first inning, Rosebud-Lott got their offense going when an error scored two runs for the Cougars to start their five run inning. 

The Cougars then scored another two runs in the second inning to make the lead 7-1. The Cougars tallied five more runs in the third inning. Nolan Kahlig, Breon Lewis, Ben Ford, and Austin Losoya all contributed in the big inning with RBIs.

The Waves fought back and scored six runs in the third inning. ISBL Austin scored eight runs in the failed comeback on a walk in the third, a sacrifice fly in the third, an error in the third, a triple in the third, another sacrifice fly in the third, and a single in the fourth. However, the Cougars turned clutch when they needed to and held on to win 14-12.

The base paths were crowded in this high-scoring game. Rosebud-Lott collected 13 total hits and ISBL Austin had eight. Lewis, Lopez, Losoya, and Rolando Leon all had multiple hits for Rosebud-Lott. Lopez and Lewis each collected three hits to lead team. 

Matthew Lopez got the start for Rosebud-Lott. He surrendered nine runs on five hits over two and a third innings, striking out one. Rosebud-Lott played their final game on Saturday against the McGregor Bulldogs. 

They came up empty against the Bulldogs, losing 15-2.
