It’s High School Playoff Football Time in Texas
After all of the scenarios from last week, nothing really changed as far as who was getting in and who would not be attending this year’s “ball.”
So without any further ado, let’s get down to the brass taxes and find out what the Bi-District round has to offer this week. Are you ready? Here we go!
District 11-3A, DI
The top two teams in the district had no trouble picking up wins last week. Little River Academy defeated the Cameron Yoe Yoemen, 5510, while Class 3A, DI’s top ranked team, the Franklin Lions, took care of Rockdale, 70-18.
Academy moves on to face Hitchcock in round one, while Franklin takes on Hallettsville. The only surprise was that 1-3 McGregor slipped by 2-2 Troy, winning by three, 25-22, to nail down the No. 3 seed. McGregor had previously been tied with Rockdale and Cameron Yoe to see who would get the No. 4 seed. Troy dropped to No. 4 in the standings and will face the Yoakum Bulldogs in the Bi-District round. McGregor moves on to play No. 3 ranked Columbus.
All the playoff teams from District 11-3A play on Thursday night, except for McGregor, who’ll play their game Friday night.
I have Franklin, Columbus, Yoakum, and Hitchcock advancing to the Area round.
District 13-2A and 14--
2A, DI
It looks like the two wins Marlin got in district was enough for them to secure the No. 4 seed, even though they lost their last game to Moody, 22-7. Riesel won the battle of the winless teams, beating Bruceville-Eddy in the regular season finale, 27-20, while in the battle of the district unbeatens went to Crawford, taking a threepoint win over Rosebud-Lott, 21-18. So it looks like this. Crawford is the No. 1 seed and plays Johnson City in the Bi-District round; Rosebud-Lott is the No. 2 seed from district, taking on the San Saba Armadillos; Moody, the No. 3 seed, goes up against the Thorndale Bulldogs, and Marlin, at No. 4, drew the Mason Punchers in round one.
Mason left little doubt as to who would be the No. 1 seed from 14-2A, shutting out No. 3 seed San Saba, 220. Thorndale – as predicted – had little trouble with Holland, winning 49-13; Johnson City secured the No. 4 seed, beating Harper by 23, 49-26.
Crawford should advance with their tough defense. The Pirates only allowed 53 points to district opponents, and 59 to nondistrict competition. R-L is equally as good, giving up only 46 points to district competition, and gave up just 55 to non-district teams. The Cougars have an offense that can explode at any given time in games, so I see them going to the next round. I’m taking Thorndale over Moody, even though the Bearcats defense doesn’t give up a whole lot of points. Marlin will have a tough time getting by Mason, though. If they can get the right combination going, then they might have a chance to advance. However, the Punchers defense has won games for them. Their impressive 20 points to district competition is… well, impressive. Mason goes on to round two.
District 13-2A, DII
Finally, the mixed up, crazy season down in District 13-2A, DII ended early (last Friday in October), so all four playoff seeds should be well rested for Bi-District next week. Granger goes in as the No. 1 seed, Iola is the No. 2 seed, Burton the No. 3 seed, and Somerville slipped in at No. 4. Granger – ranked No. 6 in Class 2A, DII – goes up against D’Hanis in the Bi-District round; Iola meets Sabinal in round one; Burton takes on Brackettville, and fourth seed Somerville has to face No. 4 ranked Junction.
No. 6 Granger should move on to the Area round, No. 4 Junction goes too. Burton should also advance, and Iola will be advancing, as Sabinal has difficulty beating teams with winning records.
District 10-2A, DII
In one of the toughest 2A districts in the state, the battle to grab the championship crown begins. All seeds were secured, and records are straight entering the Bi-District round of the UIL Texas High School Football playoffs.
Last week, No. 3 ranked Bremond snuffed out Frost, 47-14. Frost was clinging to an iceberg’s chance of picking up the No. 4 seed. Those dreams were dashed out when with the loss. Mart ended up losing to Goldthwaite, 40-17. The Eagles are the No. 3 seed, and Mart is the No. 4 seed. Chilton put on an offensive fireworks against Meridian, as the Pirates shutout the Yellowjackets, 75-0. Wortham went out on a high note, but left Hubbard on the side of the road. The Bulldogs beat the Jags, 38-18.
No. 3 Bremond moves on to play Simms-Bowie, and should have no problems moving to the Area round. No. 9 ranked Chilton’s dominate offense, and stingy defense (only 72 points given up to opponents this season thus far) should move them past Clarksville. It’s a toss-up between Cumby and Mart. It depends on which Mart team shows up. The one that wins big, or the one that seems lost at times. Gotta go with Mart, but leaning heavily towards Cumby. Moving on, Goldthwaite should advance over Maud.
District 16-1A, Six- Man DII
Only four teams are in the district, and only two advance. Those two teams are Cherokee and Calvert. Cherokee showed why they were the dominate team in the district, after beating Calvert handily last Friday night, 64-16. Buckholts took down Pawnee, 46-6.
Cherokee plays Rochelle in the Bi-District round and should advance to the Area round. Calvert drew the short straw, taking on No. 3 ranked Richland Springs. The Coyotes should get by the Trojans.
How about them apples Bubbles! Bet I make more right picks than you this week. (Wink, wink)
