Lady Coogs Plane Lands

Rosebud-Lott vs. Waco Harmony on Friday, September 8 at 4:30 p.m. at Waco YMCA

The Rosebud Lady Cougars and Coach Spencer had a great trip to Florida over the weekend and needless to say they had a great learning experience.

Now that the plane has landed back in Texas, it’s time for them to get back to the business of playing District Volleyball. They won their opener before the trip and now look to continue that success in game two.

Unlike preseason each win in district matters so the more of them you chalk up on your side the better. This year the race seems to be between the Lady Cougars, the Moody Lady Bearcats, and Bremond Lady Tigers for the top spots, with the Chilton Lady Pirates and the two Waco schools close behind.

Also they must contend with two Class 1A schools in Calvert and Oglesby who are both improved from last season. For the three seniors on the team, Ashley Sterner, Rebecca Bennett, and Lexi Hughes, nothing would be better than to end their career with a District Championship.

They have a Tuesday contest against Calvert in Calvert followed Friday by a trip to Waco. So the Lady Coogs go from riding planes to catching buses this week.

Nonetheless it is important that they quickly gain their focus and go about the business of chasing a title. Coach Spencer feels she has enough talent to challenge Moody and Bremond for the top spot, it just comes down to who catches the breaks and plays well at the right time. For the “Rolo Coogs” they are out to make their own breaks by playing well, that’s a recipe for success.

The Lady Cougars had a respectable showing in the Florida Tournament, going 2-5 against much larger schools. The tournament format at the ESPN complex had 12 courts playing simultaneously, a definite new experience for the girls.

The tournament also featured the nation’s top two teams that were both loaded with Division one signees. Overall, Coach Spencer was pleased with the work her team got in and the success they had against some strong competition from across the country.

It is a trip the girls will always remember and one they will make again in two years as part of the program’s regular schedule rotation.
