Small Grains Field Day set for April 27

Producers will have the opportunity to learn about advances in small grains production at the Small Grains Field Day presented by the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service on April 27 at the Stiles Farm test plots north of Thrall.

The  Stiles Farm is at 5700 Farm-to-Market Road 1063. To get to the test fields, take State Highway 79 and turn onto County Road 424 in Thrall, then go north for a half mile. The fields will be on the left.  

The field day is free and will be held from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., rain or shine.

Experts from Texas A&M AgriLife will be the program speakers, and attendees will get a tour of the fields.

“This will be a chance for area producers to see the type of research and practices being used in the field and to learn firsthand about the latest developments in cereal crop production and their results,” said Gary Pastushok, AgriLife Extension agriculture and natural resources agent, Williamson County.

He said attendees will also be able to see how well the various cereal varieties and herbicides have performed under the recent unprecedented snow and ice conditions.

Pastushok also said attendees should be alert to the weather forecast for that day and dress accordingly, as the field day will go forward even if it rains.

Topics and speakers   

Program topics and presenters, all from the Department of Soil and Crop Sciences at Texas A&M’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, Bryan-College Station, will be:  

— Winter Wheat Varieties, Fernando Guillen-Portal, Ph.D., AgriLife Extension small grains and oilseed crops specialist.  

— Winter Oat Varieties, Bryan Simoneau, Ph.D., Texas A&M AgriLife Research senior research associate – small grains breeding and genetics.       

— Cover Crops for Soil Health, Julie Howe, Ph.D., AgriLife Research associate professor – soil chemistry and fertility.           

— Winter Weeds in Wheat, Scott Nolte, Ph.D., AgriLife Extension state weed specialist.
